THE ROCKS ROAD STANCHIONS.
To the Editor of The Colonist.
Sib,— Would you permit me to say a few words in your paper re the iron stanchions which are now being fixed at the Bocks Road. I feel sure that the people of Nelson had a very fair inspection of the way in which the iron stanchions were to be fixed yesterday. The whole of the people I spoke to condemned the way in which the stanchions were being fixed, and upheld the letter written by aMr Light. I wish to say that I myself have been in the iron trade for a number of years, both in New Zealand and England, and I have never seen stanchions fixed with only a £ rod to hold them down before ; and I should think there are about one hundred dead stanchions in the shed which I recommend to be put in the furnace, to be melted down again.
In some of the stanchions you can see where the cast iron has left the wrought iron bar, and the whole lot is full of blow holes, I feel sure that Mr Light's way as desbribed was quite correct.
lam very pleased to see that we have got such a mechanical man as Mr Light who can stand up for our rights, and I am sure this is the sort of man we want very badly in our City Council— one who is living independently.
Yours &c, RiTHPAYiR.
Nelson, August 22nd.
