MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS.

To the Editor of The Colonist.

Sib. — Can you tell me what has become of the " Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Does any member ever visit Trafalgar Street ? If so, lam sur- ! prised that they have not laid an information against the City Council. The metal placed in that Btreet will take months to wear down; in the meantime the unfortunate horses suffer terribly. About ten or fifteen loads of fine material (costing about SOs) spread on the boulders would meet all the difficulty. Has the City Council lost control of its officers, if not, let this be dons at once. Not only horses suffer, but pedestrians oan only cross with difficulty; today I saw an elderly man obliged to go to the end of the stones before he could cross to the other side of the street, and then have to retrace his steps. lam told College Hill is in the same state, but I have not seen it, Nelson used to boast of the best kept streets in the Colony but we are fast losing our good name. I see the Council's engineer recommends a steam roller, would not the County Council join the City in the purchase of one, it would soon pay for itself, the Rooks Road for one place could jbe made good in a few months, under the' present process it will take ten years and cost almost the price of a roller. The Council has engineer, foreman of works and various officials, but no one pays any attention to small matters, else pitizens would not have to oompain of old timber left for weeks to obstruct the footpath, etc,. If these various officials cannot see these things it is time we had a change. Yours, etc,, Citizen. August 20th, 1898.
