The Police Commission.

Wellington, February 15. At the Police Commission to-day, Inspector Pender, the first witness, stated that the Permanent Artillerymen, as a rule, were not good policemen, and he urged that quarters be erected near the Station fot | married members of the Force. In his opinion, the proportions of police in Christ church and Wellington were not sufficient. He thought the Act should be amended so that a fine be inflicted on any person found on licensed premises after hours. Mr John Evans, senior clerk in the Department, was also examined. It came out in examination that Colonel Hume, who has charge of the Department, could not on his own responsibility make promotions, appointments or transfers.
