WAKE FIELD.

CONCERT AND PRESENTATION.

The building was packed, and a lengthy programme was gone through, Mr W. Lock, member of the Nelsoft liducatiort Boardj taking the chair. He commenced, witlj a . most interesting address Qii Education and Progress. Oiie of Hie principal features was the presentation of a beautiful silver-plated tea kettle with ornamental stand and spirit lamp, to Miss F. Fraqklyn. tylr W,. Look, in a few well chosen words, explained the why add the wherefore, anu added that the testimonial, which he read aloud, was undoubted proof of the good wishes of the children, teacher, parents, and Committee towards the recipent. Miss Franklyn briefly thanked all for their handsoiiie present; dnd Major Franklyn further thanked them on his daughter's behalf. He acknowledged their kindness, and was pleased to know that his daughter had successfully taught arid fit the same time retained .the affections of her pupils. Speaking about the vacancy caused by Miss Franklyn's resignation, he said he would do as he formerly had done, namely, support the Committee, whether for amalgamation or not. (Cheers.) The best items on the programme were the pieces by the orchestra (Misses Gembitsky, Messrs Gembitsky, Lightband, and Wallace), the recitation by Mr Felton, . and the tableaux. Miss it. Williams played the violiri very sweetly; Mr W. Ladley, Inspector of Schools, pre-, sented the certificates to the pupils, and spoke of the value of good attendance, and only wished, that the certificates were of a more artistic nature, as they were worth framing. Mr Lock, at the request of the teachers, thanked Misses B. and A. Baigent, N. Fowler, J. McPherson, J. Clayden, E. Hastilow, and N. Helliei;, and Mr R. Wallace for the valuable assistance rendered by them, and also all those who so willingly assisted towards the entertainment. A vote of thanks to Mr Lock brought the meeting to a cidse. The testinioriial tb Miss Franklyri read as follows I— "Wakefield, llth February, 1898. " Misa Florence Franklyn, Wakefield. "Dear Madam, — We, the Committee of the Lower Wakefield Schools, while accepting your resignation as a teacher in our school, wish to say that we do so with deep regret, more particularly on account of the children, whom you, for the last 10 years, have so successfully taught ; moreover, the accompanying present is ample proof of the esteem and respect in which you are held. " We also wish to say that there has always been a kindly and friendly feeling between yourself and the various Committees who have successively held office. We further wish you every prosperity and happiness in your new sphere of life. "Committee — "J. C Williams, James Thomas, " W. L.
