SPEIGHT-SYNIE LIBEL CASE.
Melbourne, January 3. Mr Purves, the principal counsel retained by the 'Age' in the libel action, received 850 guineas as a retainer and 30 guineas per day as a refresher. Mr Deakin received 250 guineas as a retainer and 15 guineas a day Mr Duffy, Mr Speight's leading counsel, waa paid 400 guneas as a retainer and 20 guineas a day, and Mr Coldham 300 guineas and 15 guineas a day. Ninety-six witnesses were examined, and over a thousand exhibits were put mat the trial. If the case, as reported in tba 'Age,' were published in book form it would make a volume of a thousand pages The verdiol in the Speight case has not been entered up as the legal effect of the jury's finding|will t* argued next month. The defendant's costs in the Speight case a [ e I'oo1 ' 000 ' Mr Speight's amount to about £8,000.
