Presentation. — Last evening a small party of friends met to say farewell to a well known athlete of this city, who is leaving Nelson to try his luck in another portion of the Island. The gentleman referred to is Mr H. Bolton, perhaps better known as " Cap," one of the best known, and undoubtedly the most popular of our local athletes. As a footballer he has played many a hard forward game for both Albert and Nelson Clubs, and on several occasions has proved himself in the " rep." team. As a cricketer he has done good service for the Athletic CO. with the ball, and has been honorary captain of that Club eince its formation. After some general conversation a short speech was made by a personal friend of the lion of the evening and he was made the recipient of a handsome pipe in ease, and a parcel of the necessary weed. The meeting ended with three cheers for the departing comrade, and the expressions of the best wishes of all. We are quite sure that many who were unable to be present at last evenings gathering will heartily join in good wishes for Mr. Bolton's future wellfWQ ftud happiness,
The Late Jpdqe Bboad. -Flags were flying at half-mast yesterday id token of Borrow ai B the untimely death of Judge Broad. We B learn that hia Graoe Archbishop Redwood sent a telegram of condolence yesterday, and also intimated his desire to be present at the funeral. It was expected that these Botovua would have been able to reach Nelson by > this morning, but bad weather ha<* detained > her in Wellington for fully twelve hours, and the funeral is now fixed to take plaoe tomorrow afternoon. The remains will first be ' taken lo St Mary's Ohuroh, and thence to the New Cemetery. A Welcome Visitor.— Mr Alexander Sclanders arrived in Nelson yesterday on a visit from the Old Country, and in addition to those who have already expressed a welcome, there are many, who with ourselves, will experience great pleasure in again meet- . ing this gentleman, who notwithstanding his long absence from Nelson continues to be held in high estimation. The ' Hawera Star' says : An undoubtedly rare find has been made by Mr W. Wallace, of Meremere, while underscrubbing prior to felling bush, on the property of Messrs Stretton and Jobson: The find was of two kiwi eggs. Maoris have occasionally reported as to seeing the birds about, but have not been able to fine eggs. The eggs were eaoh exactly the same weight, namely, 15Jozs. The ciroumference long way was 12| inches, and 10 inches round the narrow way. The eggs will probably be sent to Dr Hector. From the appearance of the eggs when found, it would osem that the kiwis had been frightened away throngh the work going on around. The Wellington • Post ' say 3 of the deoiaion in the oase of cruelty to a girl at Masterton— "If ever Magistrates completely stultified themselves, it is Messrs Benall and Butment. They bad a oase of fiendish cruelty to a young girl by her mother and stepfather brought before them. The evidenoe was clear ; in faot, the accused practically admitted, and endeavored in some degree to justify, their heartless conduct and shameful outrages. We say unhesitatingly that the manner in whiob these two Justices have let off Goodgame and his wife with little more than nominal punishment — one which will be soarcely felt by such people — will cause a thrill of indignation in the breast of almost every man and woman in the Colony who reads the evidence of the revolting cruelly of whioh they were guilty towards their daughter, Obbtainls the best medioine known is Sander and Sons Eucalypti Extraot.
