LOWER TAKAKA.
The annual meeting of householders for the purpose of electing a Sohool Committee was held on Monday night, when Mr J. W, Sigley was appointed Chairman. The report of the retiring Committee was read, and it contained a tribute of respect to the late Mr John Haldane, who for so many years had been a member of the Committee. Reference was made to the faot that a new teaoher'a house had been erected during the year, and a bell provided for the school with the object of ensuring punctuality, the importance of which was alluded to. It was stated that a year ago there were 85 on the sohool roll, and since then 30 children had left and an equal number admitted, so that the roll still contained 85, and the Inspector's report was referred to acknowledging that the two teachers have worked quietly and successfully. The balance ! sheet was also read. The Chairman referred to the Act, quoting from the Colonist, and after some questions bad been put a lively discussion ensued as to the definition of " lodger." The Chairman decided that a Bon living with bis parents and paying for his board and lodging, if over 21, was a lodger and entitled to vote, and that therefore Mr A. Haldane was entitled to vote. Nine gentlemen were proposed for election as members of the new Committee, and the following were duly elected :— Messrs J. W. Sigley, F. Rose, J. Haldane, John Page, Wm. Page, George Sigley, and F. Parker. Mr J. W. Sigley was elected Chairman of the new Committee.
