EDUCATION BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Education Board was beld yesterday morning, present, Hia Lordship the Bishop, in the chair, Messrs Clayden, Doneker, Hursthouse, Talbot, and Tarrant. It was resolved that the Board should meet on October Ist, for the revision of salaries. The Chairman presented the following report re the Brightwater schools:— " The Chairman the Bishop of Nelson, Messrs Talbot, Glayden, and Dencker, with the Secretary, attended the conference with the Brightwater School Committee and the following was the expressed opinion of the local committee :—) hat (hose present of the Brightwater School Committee are in favor of the Boys' School being a mixed school under a really good master, who shall have (he house next the Girls' School for a residence. That the question of the Girls' School be postponed, in the meantime the scholars attending the Brightwater Girls' School can attend Brightwater, which will be a mixed school, or B.iver Terrace. " The sub-committee recommended the immediate ereotion of a porch on the west end of the north side and also a closet if the school is to be a mixed echooh " It was resolved to adopt the recommend-, ations of the sub-committee, and that a master be advertised for at a salary of £140." The Lower Wakefield Committee wrote re architect's expenses, and it was resolved that the Board should pay the charges for half rail fares. The Waimangaroa Committee wrote with respect to a similar matter and it was resolved that the amount in question be paid. The Lower Takaka Committee wrote stating that in their opinion it was unnecessary to remove the school building, and it was therefore resolved that the former recommendation of the Finance Committee re the ereotion of a teacher's house, be carried out. j The deputation from the Motueka group of sohools wrote re teachiog of singing, asking that a teaoher of singing might be appointed for one year at a salary of £50 after which time the aohool teachers would be able to instruct the obildren. After a very long discussion it was resolved that the application of the Motueka group of schools for £50 for teaching singing for one year, be granted on condition that all the teachers participate in the instruction; that the teachers of the neighbouring schools be entitled to attend the instruction provided, and that the Board expects their teachers in the neighbourhood who are unqualified to teaoh, to attend the coarse of instruction in Binging; that Messrs Tarrant and Hursthouse be a sub-committea to approve on behalf of the Board, the appointment of a teacher and the details of arrangements; The report of the Finance Committee was then read and adopted. The matters dealt with were all connected .with repairs &o ,of a trifling nature. The balance at credit of the Board was stated to be £2580 10s ii, subject to the payments of the day. Unappropriated balanoe on building account of £79 183 3d. The Westport Committee, wrote asking for an increase of salary for Monitor Young. Besolved, that the attention of the Committee be called to the bye law on the subjeot. The Collingwood Committee, wrote, objecting to the proposed site for the shelter shed, as recommended by the Board's architect. After a long discussion it was resolved that the Committee be informed tbat tbs Board still considers the site recomme tded by the architect to be the best, bat will leave the matter to the discretion of the Committee. Mr Claydon moved a resolution of which be had given notioe. Tbat tho practice of the Board in the appointment of teachers be followed in the case of probationers and teachers of aided schools: Carried without discussion. Mr Dencker moved by notioe, that the attention of the Neudorf School Committea be directed to the very small attendance at their school, and that they ba informed, that should the present low averape continue for another .quarter, the Board will be compelled to consider the desirability of dosing the school. After some discussion it was resolved, that tho attention of the Commi'?^ '.a calkdto the small attendance at the ecuool, and that they be requested to furnish to the Board an explanation of the same. The Lyell Committee wrote asking to be allowed a probationer. It was resolved to make an appointment. The Education department wrote enclosing correspondence from the Promised Land Committee,.respecting the building of a new school end other matters. Consideration deferred till next meeting after the Inspector's visit.''-: '■■ ' ' . '. A letter was read from ths Town Sohools' Committee, asking for a probationer at Bridge street school, and another atHampden street school. The Inspector pointed out that the attend anoe had not increased, and tbat nothing had occurred to make the appointments necessary., It was resolved, that the number of children attending the Bridge street and Hampden street schools, does not appear to warrant the Appointment of more probationers, and that the consideration of the matter be postponed till the next meeting, in order that the Board may be in possession of the Inspector's report. The Board therefore declines to appoint the probationers asked for by the Committee. In reply to a petition for an aided school at Awaroa, the Secretary was instructed to forward the necessary particulars to the applioants. . The resignation of Mr Peart assistant teaoher at Foxhill, was accepted and it was decided to advertise for a successor. The Appleby Committee applied for a sewing mistress. Befused. Leave of absence was granted to Mrs! Coleman of the Eanzau school, on condition tbat she should find a substitute at her own cost, to be approved by the Chairmem of the Board; ; The Brightwatet. Commiftoe wrote dating that they had appointed Mr Bowdea as temporary teacher and asking for house al'owanei for ■ hiixi. Eesolved that the usual allowance be granted. The Bond Iben adjourned
