HAMPDEN.
A corbespondent writes from Hampden-: —One of the largest funerals which has taken place here for many years (and perhaps I might say that has ever taken place here) was that of the late Mrs Fagan (the second daughter of Mr Ribet), who was interred in the Hampden Cemetery on Thursday last, the Rev Father Mahoney, of Nelson, officiating. The rev. gentleman celebrated a mass of requiem at the house of the deceased at eight o'clock in the morning, after which the funeral left for the Hampden Cemetery. A number of people on horseback and in traps met the funeral along the route, so that by the time it reached the Longford, the procession was very large, and the number on horseback must have been somewhat over seventy, besides many in traps and sulkies. The Rev Father Mahoney, having read the burial service in English, and before pronouncing the last absolution, delivered a very affecting address, and while dwelling on the genuine virtueß of the deceased, who was taken away in the very prime of life, conoluded his impressive discourse by reminding his hearers of the shortness and uncertainty of human life, and the necessity of making that life a preparation for a happy death.
