NELSON ROWING CLUB.

The annual general meeting of the members of this Club was held at the Masonic Hotel last evening, when Mr James Sclanders occupied the chair, and there was a very fair attendance. Mr Curtis, the Hon. Secretary, read the report for last year, aa well as the balance-sheet, which showed the financial position of the Club to be about the same as last year, but the Committee anticipate that a still more satisfactory position will be shown next year. The Committee, in their report, referred to a gentleman who haa recently left the Club, in 'the following terms :—" The Committee greatly regret to have to record the loss the Club BUBtaiDs by the departure of Mr E. Jackson from Nelson. Mr Jaokson has been connected with the Club since September, 1882, when he was elected a member of the Committee. For two years, 1883-85, he occupied the position of Deputy-Captain, and for the last two years, 1895-87, he has fulfilled the important duties of Captain, to the entire satisfaction of members. It is but due to Mr Jackson to say that the Club owes many of it 3 past successes against other Clubs both to his own personal skill in rowing, and to his supervision in the coaching of individual members and crews." The Officers appointed for the ensuing year were: —Mr James Sclanders, President; Mr 0. Y. Fell, VicePresiderit; Mr W. Bogers, Captain; Mr A. Jones, Deputy-Captain; Mr J. Gardner, Treasurer; Mr Lundon, Secretary; Mr Scaife, Auditor; and Messrs Worsley. Curtis, Scaife, G. Harkneß3, and W. Atkinson members of the General Committee; whilst Messrs A. Jones and W. Atkinson,. who will ac? in conjunction with the captain, were appointed Match Committee- It was resolved that the opening day of the season be fixed for Saturday the B.:h October, and the Secretary was desired to communicate with the Wakatu Club with the view to arrangement between these two Clubs to join in the procession; After the formal business, of the meeting, Mr Sclanders presented trqphieß to the respective winners ; the President's Cups to Messrs A. E. Mabin, bow, L. G. Mackay No. 2, J. Gardner No. 3, W. Eogers stroke.; the Vice-President's Cups to Messrs A. Frazer bow, G. Harper No. 2,1 J. Gardner No." 3, E. Jackson stroke ;:tbe Committee's trophies for Juniors to Messrs H. Curtis bow, A.E. Mabin No. 2, G. A. Harkness No. 3, and E. Cresswell stroke. It was intimated that Mrs Solanders has very kindly undertaken to provide tea and refreshments to the members of the Club and their frienda at the Pilot shed on the day of the opening of the season. Avotaof thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings. The Waimea-Picton Election.—We are sorry to say that the returns from Endeavor Inlet give Mr Seymour a majority of two, the figures being: Milis eleven, Seymour six, and Harkness four. The total numbers polled by each candidate were then; Seymour 446, Harkness 444, and Mills 416. It appears that Mr Seymour has won by o bare majority over Mr Harkness of two, while Mr Mills is only 33 behind. Under any circumstances Mr Seymour will not really represent the constituency, and there is a bare possibility that he may not even do so nominally, for an examination of the voting papers might reveal an error or two. The Lynch Family of Bellringers.— . Messrs James Smith andH. P. Barnes, agents for the Lynch Family of Bellringere, arrived in Nelson last night to make the necessary arrangement for the Company's appearance here for a short season, commencing next Tuesday, October 4. , The Volunteers.—The monthly inspection parade of the Volunteers will be held this evening, when the country corps will come in by train as usual. , •■ A Good Reheby fob a Cold,—On going to bed take a dose of Freeman's Chlorodyne of \vater. The diaphoretic, or sweating action of this excellent remedy, speedily produces a igeneral glow, followed by a free perspiration, .during which tha pulse improves in character from a feeble to a full elastic one, a goad eight's sleep is obtained, and on waking in morning the Cold will be found to have disappeared. Noft greater proof ohe certainty of the curative action of Freeman's Original Cholorodjne can be adduced than the steady inoreased sale of it in New Zealand, where it is now looked upon as a household remedy for all forma of Fever and Ague.

We would remind our readers of the sale of Mr Drager's furniture and effects which is to bs h'eld:by Messrs Bisley Bros, and Co. at Wakefield to-dey. Thb City Election.—The official deolaration of the poll for the City will be made st the Provincial Hall at noon to-day. General Mite, the Circassian youth, and suite, visiied the St. Mary'S Convent Schools yesterday, and delighted the orphan children not only by their presence but also by their music and singing* . Their thoughtful desire to afford pleasure to the orphan children is evidence ofmaohkindlinesß, and they will no doubt be pleased to hear that it was much appreciated. We learn that these visitors have also kindly promised to afford a similar treat to the Orphanage'bbys at Stoke after their return from the West Coast. LooAii Election Eettjbns.—We desire to thank all our correspondents for the promptitude with whidh they telegraphed the results of the polling at the various centres on.Monday night. . ' ■ • Totaranui.—The steamer Lady Barkly, which proceeded to Totaranui on Monday morning, returned to port yesterday at 8 a.m. Amongst her passengers were sixteen gentlemen who possessed votes for tbe Buller electorate, and twenty-one votes in'all were recorded at Totaranui Owing to the boisterous waather the steamer had to lie in Astrolabe all night, and those -on board had a good shaking up. Harmonic Society's Concebt.—The members of the Harmonic-Society will _ give a miscellaneous concert in the Provincial Hall to-morrow evening. The programme will include some glees as. well as solos, duetts, &0., and an exceedingly pleasant concert is anticipated. Nelson Tow* Schools.—At a meeting of the Nelson Town School Committee held last; night, it was depided to close the schools tomorrow and Friday ior Michaelmas holidays. The Committee have appointed Mr Hobden, who formerly held the same position, their Secretary, and the remaining business wa« mostly formal, though some arrangements were disoossed owing to the sickness of several of the teachers. Jj£A correspondent signing himself Committaeman has sent us a letter referring to the Town election, but as no good can come from keeping up ill-feeling, we must decline to give it publication. A Westport telegram of September 25th, says:—" The Great Eepublic Battery cleared up with the result of 2740zs gold from 250 tons stone, 23dwts to the ton: The parcel is worth £1100. An accident at the Buller bridge yesterday resulted in one workman having his thigh broken and another receiv. j ing injuries to his heal." The Hebrew population in Jerusalem is rapidly increasing. It is now 19,080, the largest number sinoa Titus destroyed the, sacred city, A.D. 70. : The liabilities of Lord Loftus are set down at £50,000, of which £3",0G0 is secured. He states that when Governor of New South Wales he spent £3000 per annum in excess of his salary, and that ever since 1858 his salary has always been below his expenditure His pension of £1700 per annum is the only free asset. The manuscript of " Home, Sweet Home" was recently buried-in the coffin with Miss Harden, of Georgia, who half a century ago rejected the hand of the author. Bueglaking.—A Melbourne young1 lady was awakened a few nights since by a burglar who kissed her and said: " Keep still, Miss, I won't hurt you." Atter helping himself to i all the valuables in the room he kissed her again, and took his departure. Since then all the young ladies and old maids of Mcl- j bourne have expected him, and instead of doing their hair up in curl papers at night, they leave their bangs in curl, and try to ■sleep with a heavenly fascinating.smile upon their lips. One of oar esteemed contemporaries (says a New Haven paper) takes twenty lines— about 140 words—to tell " where women are valuable," And yet he might have told it in one word, to wit—namely, that is to say, " Everywhere." Parliamentary Candidates. —Looking over the present list of candidates, we find (says the ' Post') that there are 11 gentlemen who sat in the last session of the Parliament who have not sought re-election. These are Messrs Connolly, Wakefield, Holmes, Montgomery, Joyce, McMillan, Sutter, Grace, Lake, Locke, a»d Bracken, while two of the late native members, Messrs Wi Peri and Katene, have been defeated. Sir John Franklyn.—Capt. Davidson has dispelled a mistake under which we and others have labored (says the Kaikoura ' Star. 1) It has generally been aocepted as a fact that the party sent out by the English Government under the command of Captain Austin discovered the first relics found of Sir John Franklyn's party. This turns out to be incorrect; the honor is due to Captain Penny's party, and the initial credit to Capt. Davidson himself, he being the first to see the soup tins and the stakes marking the graves of three of Franklyn's party on Beeehy Island. It is not unusual, as in this case, for Government representatives to deprive private individuals of the credit of making discoveries or performing some service of note.
