THE COLONIST. PUBLISHED DAILY-(MORNINGS). NELSON, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1887. SIR ROBERT STOUT.

When it became known yesterday morning that the name of Sir Robert Stout, the Premier, was not included in the list of successful candidates, a general feeling of regret, even of depression, pervaded the people of Nelson, and the feeling does honor to those who shared it, for it is proof that they appreciate the abilities of the man, and are grateful for his services to the Colony. Mr J. Kerr, on learning the result, at once resolved to place his seat at the disposal of the Premier, providing of course that the Motueka electors would consent to his doing so, and that they would have consented we have little doubt. As soon as possible, Mr Kerr telegraphed to Sir Eoberfc, informing him of the feeling in Nelson, expressing the deep regret so generally experienced, and offering to resign in his favor. Later on Mr Kerr received a reply as follows : — " First, congratulations on your success. Second, many thanks to Nelson people and to yourself, but I will not accept any other seat." Mr Kerr's desire to aid his party will, we are convinced, be heartily appreciated, it shows that he has a mind above self, 'and that he has no interested purposes to serve.
