CITY COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the « Council was held last night. His Worship the Mayor was absent through illneßS, all the other Councillors were present. Cr. Webb occupied the chair. After disposing of more formal busineas, the following letters were read :—Letter from Mr J. Scott, complaining ot assessment. Kesolved that the matter could not be entertained. Letter from Mr J. R Hooper, asking permission to lay a drain from the 1 malthouse he purposes building in Nilestreet, into the Maitai Eiver. Eeferred to Public Works Committee. Letter from Mr J. Hale complaining oftheßtate bf the roads leading from Waimea Koad to Toi-Toi Valley. Beferred to Public Works Committee, to report upon, and give an approximate amount of cost. Letter from Mr W. T. Good, applying for leave to erect a hoarding in front of the site for the new Telegraph offices in Trafalgar-street. Granted upon usual conditions. Letter from , Messrs Sedgwick and Gowland, applying for cave to put down a drain from their tannery to the sewer in Halifax-street. Permission granted on the usual conditions. A report by the Surveyor, relative to the waterworks extensions, was then read. [We bad arranged to publish thia report, which would have occupied over a column of this journal, but after our reporter had left the Council chamber, it was required _ back again to be revised. As the extension of the waterworks, and the necessary borrowing of a very large sum of money to effect that purpose, is a matter of considerable interest to our fellow citizens, we regret our inability to lay before our readers this moring a copy of this report, which enters into the matter very fully and advises the erection of a dam above the present one, and, besides other extensive works, the laying of a 10 feet main from the reservoir to Town—the whole of the extension to cost about £6000.] Afcer considerable discussion, the following resolution was moved by Cr EYebett, and carried unanimously, " Thai the following gentlemen be invited to cmsult wjth this Council with reference to extending the water supply, and to advise with them as to the best "means (if necessary) of carrying the same out, viz., Messrs Brown, Levestam, Henry, Scott, Webster, and Akersten." Later in the evening it vr&s. decided that such consultation should take1 place on Monday evening next sit 7; o'clock, in the Council Chamber. personal attendance, but stating that he was still able to give considerable attention to the affairs of the Council. He referred to the late application made by the Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade, for assistance, and also to an application for assistance in. erecting a public sea-bathing place. He then referred at length to the Surveyor's report. After some discussion it was resolved that consideration of the suggestions contained in the letter be held over.
