DISPOSAL OF LAND in the COLONY.

(From the Wellington Independent.) A.COOBDING to the annual return laid before Parliament of the quantity of land sold or otherwise disposed' of during the year ended December 31st, 1872, We find that— In the Province of Auckland 44 acres of town land, 195 acres of suburban, and 625 aores of country land had been sold for £1725 in cash and £936 of scrip ; 120 acres were given to immigrants; 400 acres to naval and military seftiers under the New Zealand Settlements Act, &c. ; and 127,254 aores were granted to natives under the Native Lands Act, 1865, &0., and a quantity of 807 acres was given in satisfaction of land scrip or of other unspecified claims. " The return under the head of Taranaki is a blank, no land whatever in that Province having apparently been disposed of during the year 1872. In the Province of Hawke's Bay 19 acres of town land, 3117 acres of suburban laud, and 13,395 acres of country land were sold during the year for £9080 in cash. During the same period 28,541 acre? had been granted to natives under the Native Lands Act, 1865. • In tbe Province of Wellington, the sales were as follow : —B4 acres of town land, 180 acres of suburban land, and 65,155 acres of country land, the sum tealised being £25,527 in cash and £3045 in scrip. In addition, .10,229 acres were disposed of without salo to naval and military settlers under the New Zealand Settlements Act, &c; 29 acres were reserved for public purposes, and 90 acres were granted to natives. In the Province of Nelson, 14 acres of town land, 5 acres of suburban land, and 1019 acres of country land, were sold for £815 cash and £13 in scrip. In the Province of Marlborougb the land sold was 2 acres of town land, 1558 acres of suburban land, and 604 acres of country land, which realised £526 ineaah: and 1309 acres, valued at £823, for public works executed. Reserves to the extent of 694 aores were made for public purposes during the year. In the Province of Canterbury 11 acres of town land, and 105,373 acres of country land, were sold for £211,754; 12,746 acres were reserved for public purposes, and 50 acres were given in satisfaction of land taken by G-overnmont under clause 42 of the land reguStions of tbe Province. In the County of Wettland 16 acres of town land, 303 acres of suburban, and 4050 acres of country land were sold for £4464 in cash, and 2363 acres in payment of public work?, of the value of £2363. In the Province of Otago the sales and reserves were as follows :—Otago distriot: 344 acres town, and 135,480 acres country land, which realised £124,185 in .cash and £1865 in scrip ; the quantity of lend reserved for public purposes was 2709 acres. Southland district: 300 acres town and 9610 acres of country land, realising £11,030 cash.
