ROAD BOARD ELECTIONS.

Waiuea Road Board.

Thb Waimea Road District having, in complianoo with, the wishes of several of the ratepayer*, been divided into six aub-d.istriota, the whole of the Board went out of office at noon oh the 7th July, when ' meetings were held in each of the divisions to elect one member. At Stoke,. Sir. Rout, was re-elected. In Waimea East, also, there was no opposition, and consequently Mr. C. Bbst, the chairman, had to declare Mr. Barnicoat (who has represented the ratepayers since 1857) as the member under the new regime. In Spring Grove, Mr. Rosa was chosen chairman, when Mr. Baigent was proposed by Mr. B. Faibhall and seconded by Mr. W. Ratt. Mr. Joshua Bird was proposed by Mr. -Wg Rkadkb and seconded by Mr. T. Tcnnioiict, jun. The show of hands was 13 for Mr. Baigent, and 7 for Mr. Bird, whereupon a poll was demanded, which commenced immediately, and terminated at 430, whea tho numbers, were found to be Baigent 25, Bird 21, and two ballot . papers. rejected through informality, The Chairman declared Mr. Baigent, another of the original members, elected. West, Mr, W. M. Thomson, the only candidate', having been duly proposed and secondid, was .declared elected by, Mr. C. H. Fobd, the. ': chairman. A protest was made against thia ekotion by some not sufficiently punctual' ratepayer, .on the ground that. Mr» Thomson it not eligible as. not being a ratepayer, although his. , name appears on the rate list. Win (the latter the retiring member) were the 'two candidates proposed,, the show of hands being; for each respectively 6 :and 7, on which a poll was demanded, and resulted in 11 votes being recorded i'for Mr. Jordan and 14 for Mr. Win, who was there*, fore declared elected. The annual meeting of the ratepayers of this district was held at the Sarau school-room, on July 7th, for the purpose of electing three persons to represent the Sub-district of Upper Moutere in the Moutere Road Board. Mr. W. Cook being called to the chair, read the notice convening the meeting, and called for the nomination of candidates, when the following were proposed:-—Mr. James Drummond, proposed by Mr. S. Datbt and seconded by Mr. D. Benoke. Mr. Lakkow proposed and Mr. Esgebs seconded, Mr. F. Benbeman. Mr. John Benseman, proposed by Mr Jatibs Dbummond and secotided by Mr. T. Best. Mr. F. Sbiboth proposed and Mr. F. Stadb seconded, Mr. D. Benokk. A show of hands being taken resulted in favor of Messrs. J. Drummond, F. Benseman, and J. Benseman, when a poll was demanded on behalf of Mr. Bencke, which commenced immediately and continued for four houra. The polling respited as follows :— 3T. Benseman ... ... .«< 21 James Drummond... ... ... 19 J. Benseman ... ... ••• 19 P, Bencke ... ... ... 18 Rtwaka. A meeting of the ratepayers was held in the schoolroom, Riwaka, on Monday, July 7th, for the purpose of electing three members of the Road Board in room of those retiring by rotation, when Messrs. H. Fry, senior, H. York, and J. Duncan, senior, were elected without opposition. TAKAKA. The annual meeting of ratepayers of this district, was held at the Court-house, Takaka, on July 7th, for the purpose of eleoting three persons to serve as members of the Takaka Road Board in place of Mr. J. Daviß, resigned, and Messrs. Cobb and J. Lindsay, who retired in accordance with the provisions of the Highways Act. Mr. John Cann was chosen chairman, after which the following persons were nominated, viz.—W. J. Cobb, J. Lindsay, H. Walli*. and H. Bate. On a show of hands being taken, the numbers were as follows:—J. Lindsay, 42; H. WalliS, 32 ;W. Cobb, 29 ; and H. Bate, 9. No poll ' being demanded, the three first were declared duly elected. A resolution was put and carried unanimously " That the thanks of this meeting be given to the Board for the satisfactory manner in which it has fulfilled its duties for the past j ear." A vote of hanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings of a numerously attended meeting, considering the day was wet.
