THE ARTIZANS' ENTERTAINMENT.

The entertainment given; on July 22nd, by the Nelson Artisans' Society was a most successful one. • The comedy of "Used Up," one of Charles Matthews's great pieces, was most creditably per* formed, indeed, abandoning our own opinions and merely relating those' of the audience whone judgment may be fully relied upon, we may repozt that no amateur company here has ever more carefully or excellently, rendered this comedy than did the person's to whom it was entrusted on Tuesday night. If we depart on this occasion from our usual practice where all are equally deserving commendation for their exertioDS, .it is in no invidious spirit, but merely to give encouragement for further efforts and increased study to continue such excellence as they exhibit in|he outset, that we refer to the spirited ' performance of the characters of Sir Charles ■ Coldstream, John Ironbrace, and Mary Wur'iell, the last singing the interpolated .song of " Constance " in good -voice and manner. Some singing, chiefly of the comic kind, and well giren, followed next in order, and the entertainment ooncluded with the farce of" A Charming Pair," the principal characters in. which were chiefly sustained. by those who had already distinguished themselves in the comedy, assisted by some of the older members of the Society, who appear ever ready to fill up a gap of this kind rather than there should be.any.risk of a piece falling through. This working, for the general success is a most desirable spirit to maintain, and is likely to preserve the Society from those disorganising effects which but too often lead to the premature decay of associations of this kind. -
