LODGER FRANCHISE.
To the Editor of the. Colonist.
Sic, —I see by your paper that the Artizans have discussed the desirability of extending the franchise ho lodgers, and that they have come to a conclusion favorable to the project. I should hare been very glad if you had given Borne of their weighty arguments in its favor, for I think that they must be weighty indeed to induce honafide settlers to take the initiative in the matter. It appears to me that those lodgers who have any desire to participate in our privileges oan easily acquire the necessary qualification, if they honestly intend to cast in their lot with ours. The only argument, or, perhaps, rather excuse, which 1 have heard in favor of the scheme is that lodgers might be taxed, but my opponent forgot that the lodgers might easily pay taxes during prosperous times, and as easily decamp during times of trouble. In the absence therefore of any sound argument in favor of the measure, I should certainly hesitate to place such power in the hands of those who may use it not only to their advantage, but to our ruin.—l am, &c,
H. A. L.
