OFFICIAL SALARIES.
To the Editor of the Colonist. Sib, —I see by the printed statement of expenditure, &c, for the present year, that the Superintendent and his Executive have raised instead of lowering their salaries. I think this a gross insult to the public, considering the state of the revenue, the price of provisions, house rent, &c, and the rate of wages now attainable by skilled workmen and laborers. Were the situations of these persons open to tender to-morrow, I make bold to say, that there ■would be plenty of applicants who would perform the duties attached to their respective offices as efficiently as the present holders for half the money. These men cannot be over-worked, for their working hours do not average twenty-five a, week. I do trust that our members of the Council will overhaul the whole affair of salaries, and keep their eye particularly on the Gasworks job. —I am, &c, Economy.
