COLONEL WHITMORE AND 350 MEN SENT TO POVERTY BAY.
The Neio Zealand Advertiser of Nov. 30, states :—
" The s.B. Lady Bird proceeded to Wanganui on Friday evening, for the purpose of conveying a force of 350 of the \rmed Constabulary, under Colonel Whitmore, to Poverty Bay. The position of the enemy in that neighborhood affords the opportunity of striking a crushing blow, and the Government expect that a very few days will see the annihilation of Te Kooti's party, when the Armed Constabulary will immediately return to Wanganui. Such a disposal of the forces on the East Coast has been made as to secure the various posts, and means of communication, and block houses have been erected so as entirely to cover the towns. So soon as Colonel Whitmore returns, he will be prepared to take the field against Tito Kowaru. In the mean-time our position will be simply a defensive one."
