AN OLD MAORI BURNT TO DEATH.
A COEBE9PONDENT writing from Collingwood on the 27th October, says : — On a very Btormj night, the second previous to the earthquake, a very old Maori, " Joseph " of Wainui, who slept in a whore by himself some little distance from the others living there, was burnt to death, as was supposed, by the- ichare catching fire; nothing was known of it till the following morning, when the ashes of his house and. the charred remains were found, the extremities being quite consumed. The Maoris assert most positively that it is his spirit that ig occasioning the earthquakes, and they will not go near, or suffer to appi-oach them, anyoue who touched his remains. One old 'Maori, who swept up the ashes of the place, has been sent' off to some distance to lire by himself till the evil has departed from him.
