MOTUEKA VALLEY.
Chttbch of the Ascension.—This exceedingly pretty church was formally opened for Divine Service by the Bishop of Nelson on Tuesday, May 23. Thursday previous was the day originally proposed, but the storm and floods in the early part of the' week rendered delay imperative. At eleven morning prayers were read, and after an excellent sermon by the Bishop, a collection was made in aid of the building fund. Notwithstanding the cold, bleak day, upwards of seventy residents, besides visitors, were present. Tt appears from a statement of accounts presented to the congregation, that £233 12s. 9d. has been expended on the building, of which sum £215 ss. 6d. has already been raised, leaving £18 7s. 3d. still to be raised. This is independent of the value of three acres of land, presented by A. R. Oliver, Esq. After service the congregation dined in a tent near Mr. Oliver's residence, and the after part of the day was spent merrily by the juveniles, in cricket and other English sports. The church is substantially built in the early English style; the lancet windows are filled with Btained glass, and with the open roof, and handsome work of the interior leave a pleasing impression, while externally the effect v equally good.
