APPLICATION FOR THE GOLD BONUS.— ALLEGED DISCOVERY OF A GOLD FIELD ON THE MATIRI RIVER.
- (From the Colonist, October 9.J " An" application was yesterday received by Government from the Tadmor, signed Alexr ander Campbell and Co., claiming the advertised gold bonus on behalf of the applicants, for the discovery of a payable goldfield on one of the tributaries of the Buller: The application says •—" Our claim is situated on the banks of the Matiri, running into the Buller and its tributaries, and your applicants were the first party who found payable gold in that district." i Along with the application was transmitted a sample of gold found in the claim, and weighing about a couple of ounces. It is coarse gold, mixed with a portion of scaly gold having the appearance of being somewhat waterworn. The Matiri river is, we believe, a pretty large one, and embouches into the Buller. about fifteen or twenty miles above the junction of the Lyell with that river, and on the same side. These new diggings can be reached by. proceeding up the Tadmor river, thence over the dividing range or watershed, which leads into the upper branches of the Matiri. From the fact of the Lyell river having proved to possess good diggings, and also that the Matiri in a measure drains part of the same mountain system —being on the opposite or southern side of the Lyell range—it is not unlikely that the Matiri diggings may turn out not less productive than the Lyell ha 3 done and is doing.
