(From the Colonist, October 9.J ' •' * Ix tho letter of our Buller correspondent of date October 2, which we give in to-day's issue, (and which, had the postal arrangements permitted it, we should have had laet Moniday so as to be in time' for Tuesday's paper) mention is made of a prospecting party having gone to "examine some promising manuka flats several hundred feet above" the bed of the Lyell, and some miles in extent. * ' The anticipations of the favorable nature' of the locality for a good yield appear to be so far confirmed that a sensation of no common order has been created amongst the' diggers at "Westport, and we hear of pros-" pects of an unusually encouraging character having already been procured from the new locality. Captain M'Lean, of the Mary, states that the news of the discovery of the new ground has created more stir and expectation than anything he has before seen during his various trips to the Buller; ho lias also heard statements with respect to good prospects, but refrains from reporting them from motives of caution. The Mary has made a very quick passage, having left Nelson on Thursday the Ist at midnight, and arriving in Nelson at midday yesterday. She left the Buller at 11 a.m. on Tuesday last, and brings eight passengers —two diggers who have been very successful at the Lyell, five roadmen, and one digger in ill-health.
