THE MORMON WAR.
Captain Van Vliet, assistant quarter-master United States army, arrived at Salt Lake on the Bth Sept. He requested an interview with Brigham Young. The interview took place on the following morning. The captain was afterwards shewn all the remarkable things in the place, and a sermon was preached by Brigham Young, oh which occasion he said:—" I shall treat every army and every armed company that attempt "to come here as a mob. (The congregation responded 'Amen.') You might as well tell me that you could make hell a powder-house as to tell me that you could let an army in here and have peace, and I intend to tell them and shew them this, if they do not keep away."—Addressing the congregation he said—"l have told you that if.the people will love their religion all will be well; and I have told you that if there is any man or woman that is hot willing to destroy anything and everything of .their property- that would be of ' use to an enemy if left, I want them to go out of the territory, and P again say so to-day, for when the time comes to burn and lay waste all our improvements, if "any man undertakes to shield his he will be sheared down, for judgment will he lail to the line and righteousness to the plummet Now, the faint-hearted can go in "peace;.-but should that time come they must not. interfere. Before I will suffer what I have in ti;nes gone by, there s shall not be one building, not 1 a foot of lumber, nor a stick, nor, ■ a tree, nor a; particle of grass or hay, that will; .'burn, left in reaVh of our enemies. lam sworn, if driven to extremity, to utterly lay waste in. the name of Israel's God."
