Saturday, November 28.

Before the Resident Magistrate.

Vagrancy.— Bridget Dougherty, and Ellen, Dougherty (mother and daughter) were charged by Chief Constable Fagan with wandering about the streets, and having no visible means of subsistence, contrary to the terms of the Vagrant Act. '

It appeared, from the evidence of Mr. Fagan, that the accused were persons of the most dissolute character, giving gre;>t trouble to the police, and an annoyance to many respectable families. In fact, their tent was a perfect brothel, the resort of the lowest of the low. Mr. Havper gave evidence as to the general bad character of both mother and daughter. The younger defendant said that she was about to proceed to'Mclbourne; and if after this she was found pursuing her- old habits, she would be willing to be taken up. .. . The Bench decided on sending the mother to gaol for one month, and remanded the. daughter until Monday, when, if she chose, she might leav* for Melbourne. ~
