SPORTING NOTES
ON RACING AND TROTTING BRIEF ITEMS ON AND OFF THE TRACK (By “Old Rowley”) Should Do Better Attraction received an interrupted run in the Improvers’ Handicap, otherwise this pacer may have been hard to beat. It would be unwise to drop him for this failure. Two Miles Too Far! Margaret Gaillard helped to make most of the running in the Improvers’ Handicap at Epsom and in finishing fifth was not disgraced. This mare seems to find the two miles just too far, and she is fit enough at present to be worth reckoning with.
Improved Showing Although outclassed in the concluding stages of the September Handicap, Caledonian Gold encouraged his supporters by a rather good beginning. He raced along under a tight hold for a mile and, being a free-goer this may have taken something out of him. Caledonian Gold looks in line to win a race shortly. Two Good Races
Parawa Derby ran two excellent races on Saturday and this southerner should be very hard to beaz over a mile and a half, where he will be on a decent mark. Had he got any sort □f a run in the Takanini Handicap, he may have proved a thorn in the side of the opposition.
May Do Better Next Time After having every chance Mundanity was not good enough in the Franklin Stakes, but her performance suggests she will do better next time out.
Black Storm Unlucky After showing a good run throughout the United Handicap journey, Black Storm broke up in the straight when likely to take a prominent part n the finish. This pacer is now in good company, but should be capable of living up to previous form.
Needed Race? After beginning brilliantly Flying Smith had things much his own way until the end of the running for the Takanini Handicap, but he compounded badly when tackled in the straight. However, the race should have done him good and he is worth a second thought if started next Saturday.
A Class Pacer There is no doubt about Yankiwi—this young southern pacer won in real classy style when he came with a sustained run to take the Grey Lynn Handicap off Petite Yvonne and Petty Officer. That he failed in the Franklin Stakes, was no disgrace, he was conceding a big handicap to a very fast mare. Yankiwi looks like being one of the stars of light-harness racing during the current term.
Just Missed State Control did well to finish fourth in the Grey Lynn heat. He began well and paced kindly for A. Bryce; it was only in the straight that he weakened slightly and with this race to benefit him he is likely to make a bolder bid if started next week.
Regoli At Thames Having his first start as a three-year-old Regoli gave a very smart exhibition of galloping to down a fair sort of field in the second division of the Ngatea Stakes, run at Thames. Produced in very forward condition by Mentor A. Cook, and ridden by W. J. Mudford, Regoli showed as much pace as the speedy filly Nom de Plume and held on the better in a keenly fought-out finish. By Royal Arch from Symbol, this 3-year-old gelding should go further. False Favourite
It is hard to understand how the public came to make El Salto favourite for the Hikutaia Hack Hurdles, but they paid for their anticipation when the Coronach novice failed to do better than seventh. El Salto jumped carefully and without the confidence and dash of more experienced runners; that he has prospects in this branch of racing there is no doubt, but he may need a few more outings before he learns to fence in winning style.
Not Quite Solid Enough Accumulate put up a surprisingly good showing in the Hack Hurdles, and made a game showing to win from end to end. This recruit to hurdling compounded about half a mile from home, but little notice should be taken of this, for it seems more will be heard of him as the season advances. Back on Winning List A pleasing feature of the victory of Pretty Paper in the Trial Plate, was the heralding of D. J. Wyatt’s return to the winning list. This rider has been riding without any luck for a long time and now that he has corrie right again may be able to go on with it. A Trifle Pretty Backed down to second favouritism for the Trial Plate, Sea Faun disappointed many admirers when she failed to finish closer than sixth. However, the Marble Faun novice looked a trifle pretty and is a good enough galloper to be reckoned with when started again. Good Finish Staged , Backers of Cimtore seemed very unlucky on Saturday when the 4-year-old received the worst of the start and in a six furlongs sprint, which was run in 1.13 ft, Cimtore camo from a long way back to loom up in third place and the photo revealed that Herowin-Motunach and Cimtore were only separated by necks. The Cimbrone 4-year-old is holding his condition remarkably well and must surely receive a just reward for honesty in the near future. Ran on Better Hiko, which has disappointed in recent starts by failing to run on too well, reversed proceedings on Saturday, when contesting the Hauraki Plains Handicap, and, after being slow to move, ran on very strongly at the finish. This galloper may yet live up to his early promise.
