Oldest Cheque?
What is believed to be the oldest New Zealand cheque in existence is in the possession of the manager of an Invercargill Bank. The cheque was dated November, 1846 and was signed in Wellington. It is drawn on the Union Bank of Australia which was the first bank to do business in New Zealand, opening its offices in the country in 1839. The manager also has in his possession an Invercargill cheque which was signed in the city in February, 1865.
