Held Too Cheaply

“We hold scouting too cheaply,” said a speaker at the annual meet'ng of the Canterbury County of the Boy Scouts’ Association. Every parent should be made to pay 5s or 10s for the privilege, which too few of them recognised, of having their boy in + he Scout movement, he said. It was worth a great deal more than that to have their son or sons taught the principles of citizenship and good living. The fact that it was free meant that it was regarded too lightly, he said, and he was sure that if there was such a charge there would be a rush to join. He suggested jocularly that it was probably worth more than 10s to the parents to have the boy well cared for and looked after for two hours a week while they went out, and the Scou‘ movement did their baby-sitting for them.
