Field Marshal Smuts i The Te Awamutu Squadron of the Legion of Frontiersmen paid tribute to the memory of Field Marshal Smuts by flying their flag at half mast when news of the death was received.. The famous soldier and Statesman was a Legionairre. * j Mark of Respect Members of the Te Awamutu Rotary Club stood in silence for a -hort period at last Tuesday night’s meeting as a mark of respect to the late Mr Reece Hodgson who died in a motor accident last Sunday night, and in sympathy for Rotarian L. Hodgson at the loss of his son. Poultry in Demand Poultry was in short supply, with demand good and prices firmer, at the sa e conducted yesterday by G. D. Shepherd Ltd. W.L. hens made 7s 6d to 8s 3d, light 4s, B.M. hens 7s 6d, bantam 3s 6d, cross-bred cockerels 4s, 80. hens 7s to 7s 6d, R.I.R. roosters 6s, geese 6s 6d. Two Accidents Among the cases admitted to the Waikato Hospital last week-end were Audrey Woolston of Te Awamutu, with head injuries sustained when she fell off a horse. Alan Seath, a four-year-old, was- admitted suffering from lacerations to the forehead reported to have been received as the result of bites from a dog. Rotary Club Meeting The Te Awamutu Rotary Club held its weekly meeting in the Regent Lounge last Tuesday night. The meeting was presided over by Mr D. Williams. Apologies were received from Rotarian? H. Babbage. L. Hodgson, C. Lee, E. Freed, H. Scott and J. Bundle. Rotarian V. C. Hollis of the Cambridge Club was a visitor to the meeting. Paterangi House Razed A four-roomed dwelling at Paterangi owned by Mr I. V. Shaw and occupied by Mr Shaw’s mother and crippled sister, was completely razed by fire at 11.50 p.m. last Tuesday. The fire was discovered by Mrs Shaw who awoke her daughter. Both managed to escape in their night attire. Mr Shaw, who lived in another house nearby, was called, but was unable to do anything. Mrg and Miss Shaw are now staying with Mrs Shaw’s daughter, Mrs Stanford of Te Rahu Road. Plenty of Carpenters A witness giving evidence at this week’s meeting of the Waikato Licensing Committee said his firm had no difficulty in getting carpenters and labourers. They had several hundred men engaged in building hotels throughout New Zealand. One of the legal men present asked why they advertised for men if that was so, and the witness said it was good policy to do so for they sometimes got tradesmen to replace those who were not so good. Sale of Wool Opposition to any suggestion for the control of the sale of wool has been expressed by Waikato Federated Farmers. The following telegram was sent to the Dominion headquarters of the Federation:—“Please convey to the Minister of Agriculture an emphatic protest against the introduction of any form of control in the sale of wool. The Minister should be acquainted, with the opinion of farmers before' he departs for London to take part in wool discussions.” Donations Acknowledged A bat donated by Mr T. White last season for the most improved batsman in the Te Awamutu Club during the past season was awarded to Mr J. White. Another bat was donated by Mr H. A. Trigger. Mr White offered to donate a bat for the most improved batsman of the coming season and his offer was gratefully accepted and his generosity acknowledged. Tributes were also paid to Mr H. A. Trigger, and also to many others who showed their generosity during the past season. Magistrate’s Headaches Speaking at this week’s meeting of the Waikato Licensing Committee held at Te Awamutu the chairman, Mr. £'. L. Paterson, S.M., said he had had a lot of headaches over the matter of granting licenses of local trust hotels as he was the chairman of the first licensing committee to have to decide whether a license should be granted or not. Mr. Paterson went on to question of whether the Government had not passed the existing regulations before ascertaining whether they were practicable.

Waikato Stock Drive A stock drive in the Waikato which is being organised on behalf of the United Nations childrens appeal is to be assisted by tne Waikato stock and stat.on agents. In this stock drive farmers are asked to make available at their local saleyards donations of -cock. The stock and station agents have agreed to sell the stock ana ,o handle the proceeds for the campaign organisers. The stock drive is also to be supported by Federated Farmers of Waikato who are asking their members to assist by donations of stock.

Request to Join Hamilton The Te Awamutu cncivet Club decided at its annual meeting last Tuesday night to approach the Waipa Association for permission to enter a strong team in the Hamilton Association competitions and also to enter two teams, A and B grade, in the local competitions. This will go forward in the fornf>of a remit. Some discussion was held on the subject and it was agreed that one strong team should not be entered in the local competitions because it would spoil cricket and not improve the game, which was the object of the remit.

Te Awamutu Cricket Club Officers The annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Cricket. Club was held last Tuesday night. The election of officers resulted in Mr W. J. Edwards being re-elected to the post of president. Vice-presidents: H. E. Cucksey, F. C. Blundell, T. Carter, M. Barnett, E. “‘-'dford. K. B Rickit, T. White and H. A. Trigger. Secretary, Mr R. Finn, jianageiuen Committee to comprise president and secretary ex-officio and the club and team captains. Messrs E. Evans, M. Barnett, R. Finn, D. Barton. T White and K. Walker were elected as delegates to the annual mee ing of the Waipa Cricket Association. Club captain, D. Barton. Auditor, M. Barnett. Club umpire, Mr E. Bedford.
