AMATEUR ATHLETICS

LOCAL COMPETITORS AT TE KUITI EXCELLENT BROAD JUMP Once again members of the Te Awamutu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club shewed their colours to the judge on numerous occasions at Te Kuiti during the week-end the occasion being the annual open sports meeting conducted by the Te Kuiti Club. The meeting was very well organised with competitors present from afar afield as Auckland, New Plymouth and Tauranga as well as many national and exmational champions competing. The feature of the day among the local ciub followers was the excellent performance of 15-ye.ar-old Robin Close in winning the ladies’ broad jump with a leap of 15ft liin; this effort was well received by the large crowd present and it is the reward of training and listening to others that has brought success to Miss Close, for this jump is not very far behind the Waikato ladies’ record. Miss Close also gained a placing in the ladies’ 100yds event, which was won by another- Te Awamutu girl in Miss Fay Nicholison, while Miss Fay Sinclair ran very well indeed to obtain second place, in the ladies’ 220yds, and third in the 75yds event. In the senior men’s'division, the Te Awamutu relay team, comprising J. Sizemore, E. Collyer, D. Harte and M. Coiville, had a clear-cut victory in the 4 x 110 relay. Both the sprints were, won by Te Awamutu runners, Murry Colville winning the 100yds from D. Hall, of Huntly, in a fine race. Dave Harte won the senior 220yds impressively. Earlier in the day Rex Jones won the open men’s broad jump and finished third in a very fast run 440yds, incidentally the scratch man in this event was R. Hiskens, present national 440yds champion. In the open high jump, John Emery cleared sft 31 in, to gain second place. The Te Kuiti wheel race presented a spirited finish when Paddy Hughes rode very hard to cross the finishing line the same time as his club mate, Gordon Redgate, resuiting in a dead-heat with the brilliant N. R. Denbeny, of New Plymouth third. In this cycle race Denbeny rode off the scratch mark with the ace Aucklander L. E. Hughes, who competed at the Empire Games.
