CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MONTHLY MEETING HELD LOCAL MATTERS DISCUSSED The President, Mr G. G. Jonathan, presided at the monthly meeting of the Kawhia Chamber of Commerce, held in his own sitting-room. There was a representative attendance of members. It was decided to write to the Chief Postmaster at Hamilton pointing out the desirability of providing a regular mail service between Kawhia and Moerangi. The Chamber also agreed to support the establishment of a through bus service to Hamilton, thrice weekly. It was agreed to reply favourably to a request from the Town Board. This indicated that if the latter got the support of local organisations there was a likelihood of its securing a Government subsidy for improvements to the camping ground. After discussion, it was agreed to support the proposal of the Kawhia County Council to go tp the ratepayers with a proposal to raise a loan of £6200 for the purchase of machinery. The meeting 'confirmed the action of the Executive in making an offer to the Auckland Shipowners and Stevedores’ Association to unload ships in the event of their being diverted to Kawhia during the recent trouble at Auckland. Mr W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., advised that he had placed the offer under the notice of the Prime Minister.

Mt Broadfoot also advised that he had been officially advised that Cabinet had approved a grant of £2OOO for repairs to the Kawhia wharf, provided the Kawhia County Council contributed £3OO. The Marine Engineer had been instructed to proceed with the work after allowing for the County’s Contribution. Mr Broadfoot further advised that he had made representations to the Prime Minister and Minister of Marine urging an immediate investigation as to the possibility of making Kawhia available for constant use by shipping, thus reducing feright to the King Country and the Waikato.
