NGAHINEPOURI NEWS
WOMEN’S DAY Wednesday was the day in Ngahinepouri’s community week set aside for women, and this year it was devoted to arts and crafts. There were two lectures, one in the morning and the second, after a picnic lunch, in the afternoon, when Mr F. Forster of the Hamilton Technical College, who was the speaker, combined his talk with practical demonstrations of lyno cutting, and instruction in such varied branches of art as metal work, hand blocking of material, weaving and the illuminating of manuscripts. Some very beautiful examples of jewellery, silver work, embroidery, weaving and clay modelling were on display and created great interest amdngst the ladies. Mr Forster was introduced by Mrs R. A. Hughes and thanked by Mrs D. Pitcher. At the afternoon lecture the school children were present and their appreciation was voiced by Janice O’Regan when she thanked the speaker for allowing them to attend. As is usual on Women’s Day, the various small children who accompanied their mothers were minded and amused by Mrs H. Keast, thus enabling the adults to enjoy the lectures in peace. Illustrated Lecture
Mr L. W. McCaskill, of Canterbury University, whose lecture on rural education, on Tuesday night was of such universal interest to all once again drew a large audience on Wednesday night, when he gave a talk, illustrated by lantern slides, on his 4000 mile tour of the United States. Mr McCaskill, who was introduced by Mr C. Reid, prefaced his address by the showing of a technicolour film entitled “Wild Life of the Western Marches.” The lecture which followed was of interest to everyone, not only from the point of view of the farmer, but covering many famous tourist resorts and embellished with amusing personal reminiscences. Mr lan Smith thanked Mn McCaskill at the end of the evening, which came to a close with the serving of supper.
