COLLEGE COMMITTEE

LAST WEEK’S MEETING MATTERS OF MOMENT DEALT WITH The monthly meeting of the Committee of Management was held at the College on Thursday, 17th March. All the members were present and a large volume of business was dealt with. Several applications for bus extensions were received. Those which were for distances under two miles, th.e Committee was unable to recommend, as the Education Board had already declined to sanction such extensions. ‘An application for a change of route of the Te Mawhai bus to complete the circuit of Mountain Road round Mount Kakepuku was approved for recommendation to the Board, no additional mileage being involved. An application was received from the Young Farmers’ Club for the use of a room for monthly meetings. In view of the educational nature of the organisation, the application was approved, subject to certain conditions.

Accounts amounting to £256 4s 5d were passed for payment.

A letter was received from Mr L. A. Johnston, former secretary, offering to continue to act as Trustee for the Swimming Bath Fund and to give every assistance in the Swimming Bath campaign. Members of the Committee expressed appreciation of Mr Johnston’s generous offer which was accepted with thanks. His co-trustee is Mr L. E. Young, who for several years has taken a very keen interest in the project. The Committed decided to purchase a suitable machine for mowing the main playing area as soon as such a machine became available. A request was received from the College Pupils’ Council asking for the provision of pencil sharpeners for the classrooms. The request was granted. The secretary of the Pupils’ Council also wrote pointing out the urgent need for the provision of’bicycle sheds to replace those removed by the Education Department. It was decided to forward the letter to the Education Board and to give the application the Committee’s strongest support. The Pupils’ Council also requested the provision of clocks in the Library and other rooms. It was resolved that the Principal should make application to the Education Board for a grant to cover the cost of the installation of an electric (battery) clock system. In reply to an inquiry, the Education Board notified the Committee that it had in March, 1947, applied to the Education Department for a grant of £672 for the installation of improved fire fighting facilities at the College; that no reply had been received; and that fresh application had been made to the Department.

The Board notified the Committee that the architect had recommended the acceptance of a tender for the erection of the new Home Life Block, and that application would be made to the Department for permission to proceed as soon as the architect had completed his analysis of the tender. The Committee received with gratification a notification from the Education Board that it had decided to reduce its administrative charge from 10 to 7i r /r as from Ist January, 1948.

The Committee decided to investigate the merits of various types of vacuum cleaners for use in the College. Information was received with very great pleasure that the long deferred sealing work would commence in the College grounds on 21st March.
