SOUTHERN SECTION WON BY * WAIPA CENTRAL KING COUNTRY’S FIRST INNINGS VICTORY The final game of the 1949 Waikato Shield series in the southern section was played at Taumarunui bn Saturday when the Central King .Country representatives obtained a first innings victory over the Waipa representatives. The result of this game left Waipa one point ahead of Central King Country and the local team will now meet the winners of the northern section in the final which will be played at Hamilton. The final position of the teams in the southern section was as follows— Waipa 15, Central King Country 14. Otorohanga 11, Hamilton 5, Maniapoto 3. On . Saturday the Waipa team had first use of the wicket, which was very lively, and Barton and R. Tarr took the. score to 30 before the former was caught. C. Tarr did not last long and Barnett joined R. Tarr and the pair added another 20 runs before R. Tarr was out leg before. McMahon, helped Barnett to take the total along to 80 before being clean bowled. Ramsbottom was run out after scoring a nice 18. Barnett continued on his merry way and was bowled by Doyle after scoring a solid 49. The remainder of the side did not last long and the side was dismissed for 140. Doyle was the most successful of the King Country attack and collected six wickets for 35 runs from 11 overs.

Central King Country faired worse than Waipa in their knock, losing six wickets for 64 runs, but a seventh wicket partnership by Whitelaw and Allen took their total to 121 before the latter was bowled by Evans. With six runs needed for victory, the tenth wicket hit out well and soon passed Waipa’s total and carried on until Whitelaw was clean bowled by Fisher dor a solid 46 runs. B TEAMS MEET WAIPA’S NARROW LOSS The B elevens of the above associations also engaged in play at Taumarunui and the home side gained a five-run advantage over the visitors in a single innings match. Waipa batted first and were sent away to a good start by McManemin and R. Haycock who scored well and added 50 runs before being separated, but the remainder of the side failed to take advantage of this and were all out for 107. Bowling for Central King Country, Bryers claimed five wickets for 23 runs from 13 overs. A second wicket stand by Clarke and Cleary saved the day for the home side in their strike. Clarke scored a solid 23 and Cleary hit hard for his 33. The remainder of the team, with the exception of Twiddle, who scored 14, failed to reach double figures. The last wicket partnership saved the game by adding 18 runs and thereby snatching victory for the home side. Ellis, Wilson and Lamb shared the wickets for Waipa. Waipa went to the wicket for their second strike and at stumps had scored 65 without loss, McManemin and R. Hayceck each scoring 32 runs. Details are:— Waipa B.—First Innings R.
