COLLEGE EXPERIMENT

AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION PRACTICAL METHOD OF STUDY During this week a party of senior agricultural students of the local college under Mr G. D. Warring, are to conduct a survey of the Hairini district, and in particular the farms of Messrs T. Hodgson, G. Mandeno, D. Cairns, G. Parker, L. Long and H. S. McWilliam. The survey comprises a very intensive . study of the six farms detailed for study and a broad general survey of the whole district. Approximately thirty pupils are to be accommodated in Hairini Hall from Monday to Friday, two farms being visited each day, except Monday, when a general survey of the whole area will be conducted by the whole party. Wednesday is to be parents’ day, when Mr T. Hodgson’s farm will be the. subject of study. Any farmers interested in the project will be welcome /to visit the Hall or the farms and watch proceedings. A comprehensive programme of work is planned and the boys are well catered for with regard to sport and recreation. Evenings will be spent in summarizing surveys and in discussion; a certain part of each evening being set aside for recreation. * It is hoped that this practical method of study will add vigour to the course and give meaning to the theoretical side taught in the class room. Federated Farmers have made a handsome donation toward the expense of the scheme, which will more than cover the small amount involved. The farmers whose farms are being surveyed have kindly accommodated the boys concerned in the advance party. These boys from Forms 5 and 6 have prepared the ground for the main party. The generosity of these gentlemen is much appreciated and their gesture toward the education of the rising farming generation is a practical demonstration of their interest in the primary industry of New Zealand.
