Petrol Rationing

For the first seven months of 1948 the average monthly petrol consumption in New’ Zealand under rationing was 413,000 gallons more a month than in the corresponding months of 1947, when there was no rationing, according to statistics prepared by the Auckland Chanxber of Commerce and submitted to the Government. This was stated by the president (Mr J. F. Johnston, at a meeting of the council of the chamber. Mr Johnston said the information prepared in Auckland amply demonstrated the futility of petrol rationing. In spite of repeated overtures to the Government through the Associated Chambers of Commerce for the abolition of petrol rationing, no satisfactory reply had been obtained. It is freely rumoured that petrol rationing is to be abolished in the very near future.
