SUCCESSFUL PADDYS MARKET ” .3

SCHOOL FUNDS BENEFIT SUBSTANTIALLY

The Paddys Market held at Wharepapa on Saturday, under the auspices of the school committee, was voted by one and all an outstanding success. The committee’s objective was the raising of funds in aid of the school, and the hard working committee must have felt repaid at the success achieved. There was a large attendance of local district residents, implemented by an equally large number of visitors. By 10.30 a.m. the Hall and the school grounds were crowded and the entertainment was in full swing. The abundantly stocked sales tables were well patronised and many complimentary remarks were heard relative to pretty and useful articles that were for sale. Specially praised were the little wooden toys made by the schoolboys, and the attractive rag dolls made by the girls, captivated many a little girl’s heart. The tennis courts proved popular and they were kept occupied throughout the day. The horse events proved particularly attractive and those events drew the largest number of participants and the largest gallery of spectators. The children’s events also attracted much attention. The bending and flag races were very popular and they caused a great deal of excitement as the competitors were cheered on to do their best. Mr T. Fletcher as starter, and Mr G. Pollard as judge, discharged their duties to the full satisfaction of competitors and spectators alike.

Nail driving and chain stepping maintained their popularity. The competitions were popular, the highlight of the prizes being a beautifully dressed doll, and Mrs Shaw and Mrs Barnett, who were responsible for the dressing of the doll, are to be congratulated on the pretty picture it made in its dainty apparel.
