PUKEKOHE RACES

FRANKLIN CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING

KYRAT IS FAVOURED

(By “Old Rowley”)

The Franklin Racing Club will hold its summer meeting at Pukekohe tomorrow when large fields are expected to contest all races. Provision has been made for divisions in the Otaua Handicap, the Tuakau Stakes, and the Harrisville Hack Handicap.

After his convincing victory at Te Aroha, Kyrat is favoured for the Auckland Cup .Trial, of £l4OO, 11 miles. The Tweed ll—(Rosavaals gelding weakened slightly when he finished fourth in a mile and three furlongs race at Te Rapa and just hung on long enough to hold off Artificer last week. Such improvement is encouraging but the extra furlong in tomorrow’s contest could prove his undoing. However, it appears that the public will take the risk and he is likely to be firm favourite for the event.

Opposition is expected to come from Conspiracy which is looking remarkably robust and revelling in his work despite a hard and continuous campaign during the past four months. Conspiracy will be aided by the continuance of soft tracks and should give a good account of himself despite an impost of 9.4. Huntore raced well enough at Te Aroha to suggest he may be capable of repeating his Te Rapa form and the consistent Wonder Boy is sure to attract a measure of attention. Swanee seems to be at the peak of her form just now and she is an honest type, bred to stay, although so far her best form has been at a mile. Golden Secret, Foxfable and Saffron Walden should add interest to the race under prevailing conditions. It is apparent that Quick March, Silver Sam, Regal Praise and Lord Revel have not been favoured by the weather, but a slight hardening underfoot might give either of the two first-mentioned the opportunity to return to the winning list, for both ran fair races last week.

There are several good hacks engaged during the day and form should work out reasonably well. There is sure to be a sharp divergence of opinion in some of the races, but in the main the public is likely to give support to those horses which have been racing well lately, and the following may be among the most favoured:—

Otaua Handicap, 3-year-olds, 6 furlongs: First Division: Paul, Fleet Fox, Exponent. Second Division: Muriel Gay, Monica, Tossup. Onewhero Hurdles, 1 mile, 7 furlongs, 80 yards: Kenneth, Merriful, Francis Mond. Tuakau Stakes, 2-year-olds, 51 furlongs: First Division: Denebridge, Coronach’s Pride, Lady Ruthex. Second Division: Stanfred, Boy Blue, Regal Aire. Auckland Cup Trial, II miles: -Kyrat, Star Performer, Conspiracy. Papakura Hack Handicap, apprentice riders, "7 furlongs: Bengal Bay, Luxmint, Talybont. Harrisville Hack Handicap, 1.1 miles: First Division: Gollen, Dakota, The Bat. Second Division: Caber Fae, Gay Coronach, Sir Vite. Paerata Handicap, 7 furlongs: Coonbridge, Rosslare, Pine Park. Pukekawa Handicap, 7 furlongs: Grand Shepherd, Leadership, Dora Lee.

THIRD DAY AT RICCARTON

CANTERBURY CUP CONTEST

An excellent contest is expected in the Canterbury Cup, which will be run at Riccarton tomorrow when the Canterbury Jockey Club will stage the third day’s racing on its Cup programme.

There are six engaged in the 12 furlongs weight-for-age race. Beau le Havre will most likely be a firm favourite, although Royal Tan and Bruce have their supporters, particularly the latter which showed such good form in the New Zealand Cup. Of the younger horses, Eulogize has the best form at the meeting, for although Golden Amber ran on in the Oaks, she did not display the ability necessary to win against seasoned handicap horses, even under weight-for-age conditions. Eulogize could surprise. Main handicap race is the Fendalton Handicap, of £1750, li miles: it is expected to give Liebestraum a chance to redeem himself. However, with the New Zealand Cup winner, Sir Garnish, engaged, and The Grate and Julius Caesar (which is also accepted for a later race), the issue is very open indeed. In the main the fields are large and some of those engaged which have not been placed at the meeting have improved sufficiently to prove a danger to the more obvious form horses. However, the following horses have entered discussions and may be preferred in public estimation:—

Port Cooper Hurdles, 2 miles: Benbeeula, Sphere, Vanity King. Irwell Handicap, 2-year-olds, 5 furlongs: Trinidad, Western Winner, Talent. Stonyhurst Handicap, 3-year-olds, 9 furlongs: Pierre, Idle Jest, Flying Sovereign. Hagley Handicap, 7 furlongs: Arvastep, Waicoe, Disturbance. Canterbury Cup, weight-for-age, 15 miles: Beau le Havre, Bruce, Royal Tan. Fendalton Handicap, 11 miles: Sir Garnish, Liebestraum, Renege. Ashley Handicap, 11 miles: Speedy, String Band, Moneylender. Members’ Handicap, 7 furlongs: Julius Caesar, Full Play, Citril.
