THE ROTARY CLUB
LADIES AS GUESTS HAPPY EVENING SPENT While the Te Awamutu Rotary Club has held many pleasant meetings since its inception, there is not the slightest doubt that Tuesday night’s meeting, was the happiest of all. It was ladies’ night, and 26 ladies were present to grace the function by their attendance. / The Regent Lounge presented a particularly gay scene, the tables, most artistically decorated with lilies, being used as an effective background to the official table. As each, lady entered she was presented with a charming shoulder spray that called not only their admiration, but the admiration of the men-folk as well. They were masterpieces of the florist’s art. On the official table was a vase of exquisite orchids, raised by and kindly loaned by Mr J. A. Marx, of Park Road. The beautiful flowers were greatly admired. Mr and Mrs Mrkusich, who are rightly regarded as good friends of the Rotary Club, supplied an excellent dinner.
The president, Dr F. C. Blundell, presided, and associated with him at the official table were Mrs Blundell, Mr M. H. Williams (the guest speaker) and Mr J. H. Ansell (secretary). The president said it was very pleasing to see so many ladies, and he hoped that they would all enjoy the evening. Dr Blundell, in welcomingall the guests, specially welcomed Miss Audrey Newton, of Wellington, a daughter of a member of the Wellington Rotary Club, and Miss P. Bridge (assistant secretary to the local club), and-Mr S. Nelson, who supplied the accompaniments per medium of a well-played pianoaccordeon, for the community singing.
Each Rotarian then introduced his lady, and they were accorded a hearty round of applause. The president introduced the guest speaker, Mr M. H. Williams, who was also heartily applauded.
The president reminded members that on Tuesday evening next, the Governor of the 52nd District, Mr W. Macky, of Auckland, would be present and the Doctor appealed for a 100% attendance. Other important functions within the next few weeks incuded a visit to Te Kuiti, a church parade at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, and an address by the Hon. F. M. P. Fisher. The president also read a letter in which it was suggested that a branch of the “Inner Wheel of Rotary” be formed in Te Awamutu. That adjunct to Rotary caters for wives and daughters of Rotarians. Doctor Blundell said such a body would be of great help to the Club. The matter is to be considered.
Mr Williams then gave a most interesting address on the lay-out and preparation of flower bedding”. Mrs Blundell, assisted, by Sergeant-at-Arms G. D. Shepherd, then conducted an interesting and amusing “fines” session. A community singconducted by Mr G. J. Hopcroft, assisted by Mr S. Nelson (pianoaccordeOn) was greatly enjoyed. The ladies present were: M’rs-F. C. Blundell, Miss A. Newton (Wellington), M|iss Pat Bridge (Te AWamutu), Mesdames G. D. Shepherd, J. B. W. Roberton, C. A. Reilly, J. H. Ansell, J. Russell, H.
