WAGE INCREASES
MUST BE STOPPED VIEWS OF EMPLOYERS “We feel strongly that the time has arrived when the demand for increasing wages should be steadied,” said Mr J. R. Hanlon, advocate for the employers, when wages were being discussed during the hearing of the application of the New Zealand Federated Clerical and Office Staff Employees’ Industrial Association of Workers which was continued in conciliation council in Wellington. The workers asked that wages for adult workers should be £8 10s a week for both sexes, and the employers offered the rates in the present awfard, £7 2s 9d for males, and £4 11s 3d for females. The Federation of Labour, said Mr Hanlon, was said to be seriously considering making a request that the Stabilisation Regulations should be amended in order to allow the Court of Arbitration to increase wages. For the employers to agree to increase wages at the present time, he said, would be very foolish. “If you think you can get more you must ask the Court for it,” said Mr Hanlon. “We are not prepared to give it.”
