Contour Ploughing

An encouraging report on the results of contour ploughing in the Taiko Valley was given to the South Canterbury Catchment Board recently by the district soil conservator at Blenheim. A complete inspection was made of the area where the contour experiment was carried out and no scouring of any consequence was observed. Adjoining paddocks, which had been worked in the ordinary manner, showed extensive removal of topsoil and fairly deep rill erosion from the top of the slope to the bottom. While the contoured paddock was still moist, adjacent areas had already lost much moisture and were drying out. The pasture in the area had improved considerably, he continued, and the contour* work in its first real test had proved its value. Moisture had been retained for subsequent grass growth, and erosion, sheet and rill, on a fairly extensive scale had been averted.
