HERD TESTING

RECORD NUMBER OF COWS The Auckland Herd Improvement Association, the headquarters of which are in Hamilton, is this season testing 2200 herds, which is the greatest number it has recorded since its inception. In spite of the fact that the average size of the herds under test shows a slight decrease as compared with the previous season, the association will also a record number of cows under test, namely 134,000. The record number of cows being recorded is reflected, of course, in the actual percentage of total dairy cows being tested, this percentage also representing a record. During the season ended May 31, 1948, the association had 65 groups in 'operation with a total of 2059 herds, representing 127,145 cows. The record number being tested this season is regarded as particularly gratifying in view of the shortage of staff and certain items of testing equipment.
