PERSONAL

The engagement is announced between John (Jack), eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. P. O’Neill, Mlount Albert, Auckland, and Joan Wallace, only daughter of Mr J. J. Clements, of Sloane Street, Te Awamutu, and the late Mrs M. C. Clements.

A former resident of Puniu Road, Te Awamutu, Mrs Jane Kirkham, who now lives with her daughter, Mrs F. D. Wood, of Birdwood Avenue, Papatoetoe, celebrated her 91st birthday yesterday. Mrs Kirkham came to New Zealand in 1882 and lived in Te Awamutu for the ensuing 65 years until last December, when on the death of her husband, Mr William Kirkham, she joined her daughter at Papatoetoe. Mrs Kirkham can read without glasses, takes a great interest in things and is quite active. She has five children living. There are 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grand-children.

Prior to his departure for Auckland, Mr E. T. Armstrong, Stationmaster at Cambridge (and formerly of Te Awamutu), was the guest of honour at a farewell gathering of his staff. Mr Baker, chief clerk, in making a presentation of a handsome barometer to Mr Armstrong, paid a tribute to the recipient’s many fine qualities. Mr Armstrong, in acknowledging the good wishes and in thanking them for their gift, said he had enjoyed his short stay in Cambridge and he was also deeply appreciative of the co-operation extended to him by members of the staff. At an afternoon function attended by many ladies, Mrs Armstrong was the recipient of a parting gift accompanied by speeches of appreciation and good wishes. Mrs Armstrong suitably responded.
