TASMAN AIR CARGOES
200 TONS PER ANNUM LIVESTOCK NOT CARRIED Tasman Empire Airways Limited announced recently that Tasman air cargoes now total 200 tons annually, an average of almost 20 tons per month. These cargoes consist of two classes of freight—mail, which is given preference, and air freight. Letter mail amounts to 120 tons annually and the company estimates that over three million letters are flown between Australia and New Zealand each year. Air freight cargoes usually consist of goods of many commonplace and unusual types. On a recent service the cargo included 72 artificial dentures for a New Zealand dentist, lOlbs of pastry, 1000 dolls’ arms, 20 bottles of vaccine, an antique Jardiniere, machine parts, optical lenses, two birthday cakes and 496 buttons. Live fish and birds are frequent travellers by the air freight service, but normally livestock are not carried. Tasman officials estimate from the volume of last year’s consignments that loadings of air freight and air mail during the month of December will total over 30 tons.
