CHATEAU TONGARIRO
OPEN FOR EASTER RESTORATION OF HOLIDAY FACILITIES Indication that the Chateau Tongariro, closed to the public since 1942, would be open again by next Easter was given recently by the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts. Restoration work was proceeding rapidly, stated the department. It should be completed before the end of March. A feature of the work was the installation of a new water supply. Up till now the water had come from a mountain stream and frequently deposits of volcanic ash and pumice were brought with it. The resultant corroding of the Chateau’s plumbing system would be obviated with the new water supply from a spring at Joe’s Creek.
Work also was being carried out bn trampers’ tracks at the head of Lake Wakatipu and along the Rees River. The Wairakei Hotel, purchased by the Government last year, was being restored and this work should be completed by next February.
