Landing in Greece
Yesterday marked the seventh anniversary since the landing of British troops on Gieek soil, in an effort to prevent the rush southward of German forces to dominate the Eastern Mediterranean, which was vital to the British operations in keeping open the lines of communication between Britain and Egypt, the Suez Canal, and India. The British forces eventually had to evacuate Greece and the island of Crete, with severe losses of manpower and materials, but the Germans and their allies, the Italians, were not able fully to exploit their earlier success. However, the liberation of Crete was not effected until December Ist, 1944.
