STERILISING SOIL
RAPID METHOD EVOLVED Tha nurseryman’s problem of having a nigh-pressure steam unit along side soil which it is desired to sterilise has been overcome at Massey Agricultural College, by taking the soil to the stream. A steriliser based on the recommendations of the John Innes Institute in England, has been, designed by M. Richards, N.D-H. (N.Z.), of the College’s horticultural staff, to fit the back of a 10 cwttruck. The steriliser, which consists of a grid of pipes perforated on the top at intervals of nine inches, is placed in the truck and covered with soil to a depth of nine inches. The truck is then driven to the College dairy factory, where the steam at 1001 b. pressure is applied through the steriliser for 10 minutes.after the temperature of the soil has reached 200 degrees Fahrenheit. In this way, half a yard of soil is sterilised in about 45 minutes, including loading and unloading the truck. Except for the welding, such a unit can be built by any nurseryman handy with tools/
