The Reason Why

Each day the British House of Commons opens with prayers to which only the members are admitted. This is a custom of long standing. On one obcasion William Ewart Gladstone, when Prime Minister, took his granddaughter to the House, and the little girl asked: “Why do they have prayers, Grandpa?” The great statesman replied: “ The Speaker looks at the members and prays for the country.”
