RATES RAISED

INCREASED HOSPITAL LEVY COUNCIL ADOPTS ESTIMATES A special meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council was held on Monday night to consider the estimates for the ensuing year. Cr V. A. De Coek, chairman of the legal and finance committee, gave details of the various items, comparing them with similar items last year. He agreed with the mayor that the expenditure during the coming year w<i.ild have to be watched very carefully. The estimates as submitted were adopted on the motion of the mayor and Cr. Roberts. The rates will be increased by Id in the £ to meet the increased Waikato Hospital levy of that sum. The mayor said it was not the fault of the council that the rates were increased. It was hoped that the Government would meet the position. The hospital levy was as much as was spent on the borough streets. Notice of intention to strike the rates were then given by Cr De Coek. Those nresent were: The mayor, Mr G. Spinley, Crs V. A. De Coek, A. H. Roberts, S. J. Nobes, E. Hopping, F. Parsons and W. F. Woodward- The town clerk_ (Mr D. Bockett) and the borough foreman (Mr R. H. Close), were also present. Leave of absence was granted Cr. G. S. Clarke.
