FARMERS WANT HOUSES
IN PREFERENCE TO DANCE HALLS At last executive meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union (Auckland Province) a remit was received from Rotorua “That where land is ready for settlement housing should be given priority so that the land can be .settled.” Mr L. A. Newall, supporting the remit, said the position was very bad in the Rotorua district where farms that the State had grassed had to get rid of their stock by sale and could not be settled for lack of housing. It was a crying shame. Mr S. E. Hall seconded the remit which was carried. It wias also agreed on Mr A. C. Harrison’s suggestion that the attention of the Rehabilitation Committee should be drawn to the particular cases mentioned. Mr R. D. Dunning mentioned that a new hall had recently been erected at Whakatane. It appeared that it was possible to find timber and labour for a dance hall in the town but not for houses in the country.
