FEDERATED FARMERS
PROVISIONAL COUNCIL CRITICISED PROPOSED TARIFF BOARD • __ Reported action by the Council of the Farmers’ Federation was adversely criticised at last executive meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union (Auckland Province). Mr Sexton moved that the New Zealand Farmers’ Union (Auckland Province) protests against the reported action of the Farmers Federated in setting up a committee to deal with tariff questions, as the policy of the farming industry has been laid down many years ago and that no alteration can be made without the whole matter being discussed by a full conference of the New Zeal land Farmers’ Union. Seconding the motion, Mr J. H. Furniss said there were inherent dangers in such policies. A tariff board such as was suggested would simply keep granting tariffs under pressure from special interests. Setting up such a board would constitute a weakening of the Farmers’ Union position. Mr A. E. Robinson said that if they were to get policy matters, decided by the heads of the new organisation instead of by resolution of the rank and file then all the fears he had had regarding the Federation would prove to/have been justified.
